What is the difference between a dental crown and a bridge?
A crown is a cap that covers and protects a single damaged tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth (or teeth) to crowns placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. In short: crowns repair teeth you still have, while bridges fill spaces where teeth are gone.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
With good daily hygiene and regular dental checkups, crowns and bridges can serve you well for many years. They can still chip, loosen or develop decay at the edges, which is why routine visits matter — small problems caught early are usually simple to fix. Habits like grinding your teeth, chewing ice or using teeth as tools will shorten their lifespan, so a night guard may be recommended if you grind.
Do I really need a crown, or would a filling be enough?
It comes down to how much healthy tooth structure remains. Small to moderate cavities are fine with a filling, but a crown is usually the safer choice for badly cracked teeth, teeth weakened by large old fillings, or teeth that have had root canal treatment. Your dentist will show you on the X-ray and explain why a crown is recommended rather than simply patching the tooth.
What are same-day CEREC crowns — are they as good as traditional crowns?
Same-day CEREC crowns are milled right in the office from a solid block of dental ceramic, which means no messy impressions, no temporary crown and no second appointment. The fit and appearance are excellent for a wide range of cases, and many Scarborough patients prefer finishing everything in one visit. Your dentist will confirm whether your specific tooth is a good candidate for the same-day approach.
Who is not a good candidate for a dental bridge?
A bridge needs strong, healthy teeth on both sides of the gap to serve as anchors — if those neighbouring teeth are weak, heavily filled or have gum disease, a bridge may fail prematurely. Very long gaps or missing back molars with no tooth behind them also make bridges a poor choice, and a dental implant is often the better solution in those cases. A full examination, including X-rays, is the only way to know which option suits your mouth.
Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) cover crowns and bridges?
Some crown and bridge treatments may be covered for eligible CDCP patients, but coverage is never automatic — it depends on your eligibility assessment and the specific treatment, and benefits follow the CDCP fee guide rather than the full fee. AF Dental is CDCP-friendly and direct-bills the plan for eligible treatments. Book a consultation and the team will verify your coverage and provide an exact written quote before any work begins.
