How do I know whether I need full or partial dentures?

Full dentures replace all the teeth in an upper or lower arch and are for patients who have lost (or must have removed) every tooth in that arch. Partial dentures fill in gaps when some natural teeth remain — they clip onto your healthy teeth for support. Your dentist will examine your remaining teeth, gums, and bone before recommending either option, since keeping healthy natural teeth is always preferable when possible.

Will my dentures look natural?

Modern dentures are designed to mimic natural teeth in shape, shade, and gum tone, and most people will not be able to tell you are wearing them. Be honest with yourself, though: dentures feel different from natural teeth at first, and there is a normal adjustment period of a few weeks while your muscles learn to hold them. Follow-up adjustments at AF Dental are part of the process, not a sign something went wrong.

How long do dentures last?

With good daily care, dentures typically last several years, but they are not lifetime devices — your gums and jawbone gradually change shape, so relines or replacements become necessary over time. Never try to adjust or repair a denture yourself with household glue, which can damage it beyond repair. Bring it to us and we will assess whether a reline, repair, or remake is the right call.

Will I be able to eat normally with dentures?

Yes, but give yourself time: start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chew on both sides, and add firmer foods gradually over a few weeks. Very sticky, hard, or chewy foods remain tricky with conventional dentures. If stability while eating is your top concern, ask us whether implant-supported dentures might suit you — they are not right for everyone, but they hold far more firmly for the right candidate.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Clean them daily with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which scratches the surface), rinse after meals, and remove them at night so your gums can rest. Handle them over a folded towel or a sink full of water — dentures break easily if dropped. And keep seeing your dentist regularly: your mouth still needs check-ups even with no natural teeth left.

Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) cover dentures?

Dentures are covered for eligible CDCP patients, subject to an eligibility assessment first — coverage is never automatic or guaranteed in full, and the plan reimburses according to the CDCP fee guide.
