What is the difference between composite bonding and porcelain veneers?
Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin sculpted directly onto your tooth and hardened with a special light — usually finished in a single visit with little or no enamel removal. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells crafted in a dental lab, placed over two visits, and they resist stains better and generally last longer. Bonding is the more conservative, single-visit option; veneers are the premium choice for a bigger or longer-lasting transformation.
How long does dental bonding last?
With good care, composite bonding commonly lasts around 7 to 10 years before it may need a touch-up or replacement. Bonding can chip under heavy biting forces and gradually pick up stains from coffee, tea or smoking. The good news is that bonded areas are easy to polish at your regular checkups and simple to repair if a small piece chips.
Does bonding damage the natural tooth?
One of bonding’s biggest advantages is how conservative it is — in most cases little to no natural enamel needs to be removed. The tooth surface is gently conditioned so the resin adheres, but the underlying tooth stays essentially intact. That makes bonding a good first step for patients who want improvement without committing to the irreversible enamel reshaping that porcelain veneers require.
Can bonding really fix gaps and chips in one visit?
Yes — closing small gaps, repairing chips, lengthening worn teeth and covering stubborn spots are exactly what bonding does best, all in about one to two hours. There are limits, though: very large gaps, severely misaligned teeth or bite problems may need orthodontics, veneers or crowns instead. Your dentist at AF Dental will tell you honestly whether bonding alone can deliver the result you are picturing.
Will bonded teeth stain like normal teeth?
Composite resin stains more easily than porcelain, so heavy coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco use can dull bonded teeth over time. Daily brushing, limiting staining habits and professional polishing at your Scarborough checkups go a long way. If deep staining ever becomes noticeable, the bonding can usually be polished or replaced without starting over.
Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) cover dental bonding?
When bonding is done purely for cosmetic reasons — improving the shape or appearance of teeth — it is generally not covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan. (Bonding placed as part of a medically necessary restoration is assessed differently.)
