Do I really need my wisdom teeth removed, or can I keep them?
Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy, pain-free, and easy to clean, they can often stay. Removal is usually recommended when they are impacted, cause repeated infections or swelling, damage the neighbouring molars, or push your other teeth out of alignment. At AF Dental, the decision is always based on an exam and X-rays — never automatic.
Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The area is fully numbed before we begin, and sedation options are available if you feel anxious, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. Afterward, expect some soreness and swelling for a few days, which is usually well managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses. Most people are back to their normal routine within two to three days.
What is dry socket, and how can I avoid it?
Dry socket happens when the protective blood clot in the extraction site comes loose too early, exposing the bone — it causes a deep, throbbing pain a few days after surgery. To prevent it, avoid straws, smoking or vaping, spitting forcefully, and vigorous rinsing for the first several days. Following the aftercare instructions we give you at AF Dental keeps this risk very low.
What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?
Stick to soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first two to three days — yogurt, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and lukewarm soups work well. Avoid hot, crunchy, chewy, or seedy foods that can irritate the healing sites or get trapped in them. You can gradually return to your normal diet as comfort allows, usually within a week.
Am I too old to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Removal is simplest in the late teens and twenties, when the roots are not fully formed and the surrounding bone is softer — but it is never too late if the teeth are causing problems. Healing may take a little longer in older adults, and the procedure can be slightly more involved, which is why we assess each case individually. If your wisdom teeth are infected or damaging nearby teeth, removing them is worthwhile at any age.
Will my dental plan or CDCP cover wisdom tooth extraction?
Many private dental plans cover extractions that are medically necessary, though every plan has its own limits. The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers eligible patients for services like extractions according to its fee guide — coverage is never automatic or full, and an eligibility assessment comes first. AF Dental direct-bills CDCP for eligible treatments, and our Scarborough team can give you an exact written quote at your consultation — just call us.
